Varsity semifinals vs. Loyola results

Congratulations to the Varsity water polo team for their excellent effort in the MIAA Championship semi-finals today, where the Gaels faced the Loyola Dons for the second time in three days. MSJ came out strong with excellent defense and executed on offense to take a 2 – 0 lead, and at the end of the first half, Lorenzo Gurri narrowly missed a blistering upper corner goal after a called foul well outside five meters with one second left that would have ended the half on a tie, but instead the Gaels entered half-time at a close 4 – 5 disadvantage, giving the #1 seeded Dons all they could handle. Unfortunately, in the second half, the Dons’ swimming athleticism became more of an advantage, and the Gaels ended up losing 5 – 13, a score that doesn’t really reveal how competitive the match-up was and how well MSJ played overall. Special kudos to Christian McCormick, who was a beast in the goal, recording 14 saves (including a bunch of key stops in the first half), one steal and several good plays that helped MSJ maintain possession after a block. Ryan Morgan, Jeremy Luers, Lorenzo Gurri and Hunter Smith scored for MSJ, and Jack Gregory & Matt Emelio joined these players recording assists.
