Easterns

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Mon, Nov 7, 2016 at 12:05 PM

Congratulations to the water polo team for their play in the final tournament of the year this past weekend at the Eastern Prep High School Water Polo Championships, where MSJ was the 7th-seed (of eight) in the lower “B” bracket. Mount Saint Joe had a tough time early in their first game against Penn Charter (PA), over whom MSJ earned an early season victory this past August, falling to 0 – 5 to open the game and 2 – 10 at halftime. A redoubled second half effort helped the Gaels compete more evenly, but the slow start was too much to overcome, and the score ended 7 – 14.

In the second game vs. Pingry (NJ), the Gaels started out 2 – 0, but then let up eight unanswered goals, and the dominant play of one or two skilled opposition players proved too much to handle, and MSJ lost 12 – 22.

The Gaels’ most competitive game was on Sunday versus St. Benedict’s Prep (NJ), where the Gaels were able to muster the most offense of the weekend and actually out-shot the opposition, but 19 shots missed the mark, and the Gaels fell 9 – 14.

Adam Stein led St. Joe in scoring each game, amassing 13 goals in the tournament. Ben Oursler led the Gaels in assists with 6 on the weekend. Other teammates who scored goals and/or recorded assists included Luke Buczynski, Sam Monaco, Michael Bangert, Colin Scott, Tim Stevick, Ryan Morgan, Lorenzo Gurri, Jeremy Luers, Luke Peters and Jack Gregory.

A reminder that the water polo banquet is scheduled for November 29 at 7 pm in the MSJ cafeteria. Look another message soon with details.

Easterns water polo November 5/6, 2016

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Tue, Oct 25, 2016 at 6:18 PM

Dear all,

The Eastern Prep Water Polo Tournament seedings, locations and schedules have been set. Apologies for not communicating the information below sooner, but it was not until this afternoon that confirmations regarding the tournament were sent out to the teams involved.

The team will travel via school minibus to the tournament. The team will stay at the Fairfield Inn Marriott Valley Forge, 258 Mall Boulevard, King of Prussia, PA 19406, 610-337-0700. This is on the loop road of the gargantuan King of Prussia Mall. There are several hotels in the area, but if any parent would like to stay at the Fairfield Inn, you are encouraged to call the number listed above (NOT the general reservations #) and ask for the sales manager, and then indicate you would like to book a room with the Mount Saint Joe group; the hotel has temporarily held some rooms for our families at a reduced price.

We will play our games at the Episcopal Academy, 1785 Bishop White Drive, Newtown Square, PA 19073. The game schedule is below.

Itinerary: we will leave from the MSJ turnaround at 12:30 pm on Saturday, November 5th and drive directly to the hotel to check-in, and then proceed immediately to EA get settled and prepared for warmups prior to our first game at 5:00 pm. Students should eat a good meal prior to boarding the bus, and bring food with them to eat as lunch and/or snacks in the afternoon and evening – as the schedule below indicates, we will play our second game at either 8:00 pm or 9:00 pm Saturday night, with only the opportunity for some refueling in between. Breakfast is served in the hotel, and lunch is available from several local locations, including the following recommendation: see www.ourdeli.net, located on East Lancaster Ave, a favorite of past MSJ water polo teams (not to mention coaches). Please note on the schedule below that our final game time on Sunday can vary considerably, depending on our win/loss progression through the first two games.

A permission slip will be emailed and posted at Team App soon. Please deliver it completed to coach McDivitt or Dougherty as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Greg McDivitt

Loyola games

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Wed, Oct 19, 2016 at 6:10 PM

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for battling hard against the undefeated Loyola JV squad on Tuesday. The Gaels put a scare into the top-ranked Dons, taking a 5 – 5 tie score into the 4th period, but MSJ was unable put Loyola away, and the Dons escaped defeat, final score of 6 – 7. Lorenzo Gurri led the team in scoring with four goals; Jeremy Luers and Luke Peters also scored.

Congratulations as well to the Varsity Water Polo team, who also battled hard against Loyola, ranked second in the league with a 12 – 3 overall record. Seemingly down and out by a score of 1 – 9 midway through the second period, the Gaels refused to quit and worked their way back into the game, finishing the game at a score of 9 – 14. Adam Stein led the scoring with five goals; Sam Monaco and Tim Stevick added two goals each. Danny Miller recorded eleven saves and two aggressive, well-timed steals.

water polo

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Fri, Oct 14, 2016 at 8:58 AM

Congratulations to the JV water polo team for their 10 – 9 victory in double overtime against Gilman yesterday. Knotted up at eight apiece at the end of regulation, Lorenzo Gurri scored in the first OT and Luke Peters in the second, but the victory was sealed by an excellent team effort in defense, highlighted by Aidan Dunworth’s swarming press, a critical steal late in the game by Matt Emelio (who led the team with three) and by Christian McCormick in goal, who recorded five of his fourteen saves in the overtime periods. Ryan Morgan also scored in the game, and Jeremy Luers again led the team in assists.

Congratulations as well to the Varsity water polo team who played with fire in their guts and spit in their eyes against Gilman on MSJ’s senior day. At the end of the first half, the Gaels were down 1 – 10, but they never wavered, and instead ratcheted up the defensive intensity, kept driving on offense (drawing 13 ejections to MSJ’s 7), and started shooting lights out, rattling the league’s best goalie, scoring a total of ten against him, and essentially winning the second half 9 – 6, finishing with a final score of 10 – 16. Special congratulations to seniors Michael Bangert (led the team with four goals, all in the fourth quarter), Tim Stevick (broke the seal and scored first for the team) and Sam Monaco (scored once, tied for the team lead with two steals and two assists, and insists that I must have missed a few because two assists seems low).

Congratulations again to both squads!

McDonogh games

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Wed, Oct 5, 2016 at 10:16 AM

Congratulations to the JV water polo team for their efforts in hotly contested, intense battle against McDonogh yesterday in a game that saw seven tie scores and went into double overtime. Although the Gaels dominated in stretches and out-shot the Eagles 34 – 20, the rewards for all the hard work in the pool remained largely elusive in the scoring department, and when McDonogh went ahead 8 – 9 in the final minute, the Gaels were unable to answer back. It was a disappointing loss for the squad, who put their all into the effort, and kudos go to the team for their grit and determination; it was a great game to be a part of, frustrations aside. Luke Peters, Jack Gregory, Matt Emelio, Lorenzo Gurri and Jeremy Luers all scored in the game. Ryan Morgan’s tenacious defense yielded a team-leading three steals, and Christian McCormick recorded five saves in the 4th quarter and overtime periods to keep the Gaels in the game right to the end.

The varsity Gaels also worked hard, but were outmatched by McDonogh, 3 – 18. Adam Stein and Tim Stevick scored.

announcement – water polo

From: Greg McDivitt

Congratulations to the water polo teams for battling illness, injury and the weather as they played well in six games in an outdoor pool at Landon this weekend. Highlights included JV victories over Whitman, 15 – 2, and Landon, 7 – 1. Luke Peters and Jack Gregory led the scoring with seven goals apiece, and Jeremy Luers led the team with eight assists. Adam Stein led the varsity with ten goals, and special recognition goes to captain Sam Monaco for playing well and earning 24 saves in his career debut in goal, stepping up to fill in the role as illness depleted the bench and left the Gaels with a short roster.

water polo – chc results

From: Greg McDivitt

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for their victory over Calvert Hall yesterday, 11 – 9. Luke Peters led the scoring with five goals; Lorenzo Gurri scored three times, Jack Gregory twice, and Gage Bangert added a goal. Jeremy Luers led the team with four assists. Ryan Morgan joined the aforementioned players to contribute to the Gaels’ swarming defense, which recorded a season-high thirteen steals in the game.

The team fell by a score of 7 – 14 in a game that was relatively evenly matched; the Gaels consistently won hard-earned chances but sometimes faltered in the final execution of plays, as they shot 28% on the day. Goals were scored by Adam Stein, Michael Bangert, Sam Monaco and Luke Buczynski. Danny Miller recorded thirteen saves.

water polo

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Wed, Sep 21, 2016 at 12:06 PM

Congratulations to the JV water polo team for fighting hard against Gilman yesterday in an exciting game that unfortunately ended similarly to last week’s game against McDonogh with a one goal loss to an MIAA opponent, 11 – 12. In a balanced offensive attack, Luke Peters, Jeremy Luers and Lorenzo Gurri each contributed three goals; Jack Gregory added two scores. Ryan Morgan and Matt Emelio played tough defense and had two steals apiece. The team looks forward to the opportunity to play Calvert Hall at home on Thursday.

The Varsity water polo team played with a lot of heart and a lot of effort and never backed down against the experienced, talented squad from Gilman. The Gaels fell by a score of 2 – 20 and look forward to the chance to play Gilman at home in a bigger pool later this season.

Dear all,

We have the schedule of games for the Big Bear tournament hosted by Landon on October 1st & 2nd. See below!

Players should provide their own transportation to the games. If this presents any issues, please contact Coach McDivitt directly. Bus transportation can be arranged if necessary.

Players need to arrive at Landon one hour before the start of game time.

water polo games Saturday/Sunday October 1/2

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Mon, Sep 12, 2016 at 5:32 PM

Dear all,

As described at our pre-season meeting August 17th and the MIAA sportsmanship meeting on August 23rd, we plan to play both JV and Varsity games in a tournament in Bethesda, MD on October 1st & 2nd, but we will not travel to Newtown Square & Pottstown in Pennsylvania in October for what are using our perennial games versus Episcopal Academy and the Hill School.

Unfortunately, we still do not know any details regarding the schedule of games at Holton Arms (the tournament site) for 10/1 & 10/2, but conversations with the Landon coaching staff (the host school) this past weekend at Navy indicates that we may get four games for both JV and Varsity (eight games total).

As soon as the schedule is available, I will forward it. In the meantime, please keep the weekend of October 1 & 2 as free as possible, and thank you for your patience and flexibility. We hope to have details filled in soon.

Bus transportation to Navy this weekend

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Thu, Sep 8, 2016 at 6:25 PM

Dear all,

A minibus is available to take players to and from the Navy tournament this weekend both on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the bus will leave from the MSJ circle at 10:30 am. Games are at 1:00 and 4:00. The bus will return to MSJ after the second game.

On Sunday, the bus will leave from the MSJ circle at 7:30 am. Games are at 10:00 and 1:00. The bus will return to MSJ after the second game.

Please email me (Coach McDivitt) directly ASAP if your son plans to ride the bus on one or both days. One-way or two-way shuttles are fine – I just need to know who should be on the bus.

For players and families that are driving directly to the USNA in Annapolis (this option is fine!): unless you already possess access to the Academy campus, you will need to park in town and enter the pedestrian gate. The water polo pool is located in Macdonough Hall.

Thank you,

Greg McDivitt

water polo suit purchases

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Thu, Sep 8, 2016 at 6:02 PM

Dear all,

Regarding the purchase of team suits this year: there are multiple options. Please read on.

1) The Varsity Captains are organizing the purchase of a new team suit that is independent of this email. Players should talk to the captains for details. The idea is that all the Varsity players get the suit the Captains are arranging. That does not mean that Varsity players cannot get a suit from options below, nor is the Captain-arranged suit option exclusive to Varsity players – JV players can also order.

2) Posted at this link (http://streamlinesswimandsport.com/t/mount-st-joes) and at our Team App (hit the “Buy a Suit” button) there are a LIMITED number of custom checkered w/MSJ Gael logo suits available in either brief or jammer style; in some sizes, there may be no stock in a particular style. These are available for direct order via the website. Please make any purchase before 9:00 am Tuesday, 9/13. The cost is $38-$40. NOTE: the sample sizing suits the players have tried on the last two days at the pool were provided by the Streamlines company for the suits available at this website. Given the limited stock, all sales are final.

3) I have three solid black brief style water polo suits with a small purple/white “MSJ” emblem from St. Joe athletic department stock available for immediate purchase directly from me. Sizes: two size 34, one size 38. Reduced price of $20. Check payable to MSJ or cash acceptable. See me at my office or at the pool. First come, first served.

I hope these options provide all those who want one or more customized MSJ suits the chance to get them!

announcement – water polo

From: Greg McDivitt

Congratulations to the JV water polo team for their excellent effort against perennial league champion Loyola yesterday. After falling behind 2 – 9 early in the third quarter, the Gaels showed grit and determination and clawed their way back to a respectable 8 – 13 finish in the early season matchup. Luke Peters and Jack Gregory led the team with three goals each; Ryan Morgan and Lorenzo Gurri also scored. Jeremy Luers added two assists.

The Varsity water polo team also played well in their season opener and held a 3 – 1 lead over Loyola in the first quarter, but as the game progressed, the Dons’ superior numbers and early season fitness could not be matched, and the Gaels fell 8 – 20. Ben Oursler, Adam Stein, Tim Stevick, Sam Monaco and Michael Bangert all scored, and Danny Miller’s fourteen saves included some spectacular stops.

Adam Stein led the scoring with six goals; Michael Bangert, Sam Monaco, Tim Stevick, Colin Scott and Luke Buczynski also scored for St Joe. CHANGE TO WATER POLO GAME Schedule September 10 & 11

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Thu, Sep 1, 2016 at 8:38 AM

Dear all,

Our games have changed for the Battle of the Beltways tournament at the Naval Academy on Saturday & Sunday, September 10th & 11th as follows:

9/10 – 1:00 vs. Navy AC Blue

4:00 vs. St. Pius X

9/11 – 10:00 vs. Whitman

1:00 vs. Vulture

Transportation for players by minibus from MSJ will be available both days, but players and families are encouraged to go directly to the USNA; you do not need to ride the bus. Details about security and entrance to the campus will be available next week; I would plan on parking in town and using the pedestrian entrance. Remember to bring photo ID.

Our game schedule makes attending mass a little tricky, and it is recommended that families attend a Saturday evening at their home parish, if scheduling provides the opportunity (the 5:00 pm service at St. Mary’s on Gloucester street would require late arrival). St. Andrew’s Chapel on the grounds of the USNA has an 11:30 am mass on Sunday; players who have no other option might need to depart early to get back to warm-ups at the pool.

spring water polo at the Y in Catonsville

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Mon, Apr 25, 2016 at 4:47 PM

Dear all,

Through the initiative of Mrs. Marianne Gregory, mother of Jack (9) and Jeremy (12) (not to mention two MSJ water polo alumni!), it appears that we are on track to have an opportunity for spring water polo at the Y on Rolling Road in Catonsville, much as we did through the work of Mrs. Gregory and other MSJ parents last spring.

Mr. Elliot Hall, MSJ class of 2014 and Navy Men’s Club water polo player, has agreed to lead the training and skills development sessions, which are tentatively scheduled for Sunday evenings from 6:00 – 6:45 pm.

Please note: the sessions may begin as soon as this Sunday, May 1st.

Please contact Mrs. Marianne Gregory directly with questions and for more information about how to register at the Y for this opportunity, which will incur a class session fee. If applicable, Mrs. Gregory may also forward information via a Reply All to this message.

Thank you,

Greg McDivitt

Dear all,

A website has been created for the 2015 Eastern Prep Water Polo championships this weekend:

http://2015.waterpoloeasterns.com/

You are encouraged to check the website for game updates and other information.

PLEASE NOTE: a final re-seeding of the tournament has moved Mount Saint Joseph from the 4th seed to the 3rd seed. Our game time of 5:00 pm on Saturday is unchanged, but our first opponent is now Pingry, not Germantown Academy. Given the different seed, our possible games on Sunday are now changed as well. Full bracket available at the website.

Reminder to meet at MSJ Saturday at 11:45 am for a 12:00 noon departure.

Date: Mon, Oct 26, 2015 at 7:41 AM

Congratulations to the Varsity Water Polo team for their great effort in the MIAA Water Polo tournament last Friday in what may have been the best post-season showing in the 15-year history of the program. In an evenly-matched, toughly-fought battle against Loyola, the Gaels outshot the Dons 31 – 22, but ultimately came up short, 7 – 10. Dylan Gwinn and Michael Caulfield scored for the Gaels, Andy Rudrow again led the team in assists, and Jeremy Gregory recorded 12 saves in the game.

The Varsity Water Polo team has qualified for the Eastern Prep Water Polo Championships to be held in New Jersey in two weeks.

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Thu, Oct 15, 2015 at 10:02 PM

Congratulations to the Varsity Water Polo team for their victory against McDonogh yesterday, in a game that Head Coach Patrick Underwood described as “one of the best-played games in the history of the Mount Saint Joseph water polo program.” Great defense defined the Gaels’ effort, and goalie Jeremy Gregory came up big and recorded 8 of his 11 saves in the second half, enabling St. Joe to erase a 6 – 8 deficit in the third quarter and score five unanswered goals on the way to an 11 – 8 victory. On the offensive end, Michael Caulfield and Dylan Gwinn led the scoring with six and four goals, respectively. Andy Rudrow added a goal, and he shared the team lead in assists with Sam Monaco, each recording three. The victory assured Mount Saint Joe a spot in the MIAA playoffs next weekend.

The JV Gaels battled McDonogh to a scoreless tie at halftime and then scored first in the third quarter, but then the game got away from them, and they fell to the Eagles, 3 – 8. Lorenzo Gurri, Jack Gregory and Ben Oursler all scored. Luke Peters, Adam Stein and John Nguyen had assists.

water polo banquet & post-season info

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Thu, Oct 15, 2015 at 7:58 PM

Dear all,

Save the date – the water polo banquet will be Thursday, November 19th at 7:00 pm in the MSJ cafeteria. We will again arrange catering with Italian cuisine from Mamma Lucia’s of Hanover. I will send out an email in early November with more details.

Regarding the remainder of the water polo season – the regular season ended today with the games at McDonogh. Varsity will play in the MIAA Championship playoffs beginning on Friday, October 23rd. Details about times will follow early next week, as they are dependent on the outcomes of games not yet played by other schools. The Eastern Prep tournament is Saturday/Sunday on November 7/8. As of now, the most likely location we will play is Lawrenceville, New Jersey, though pending the outcomes of tournaments next weekend among schools in Baltimore and in Philadelphia, it is possible we may play at the Episcopal Academy outside of Philadelphia. Stay tuned for details about times and locations for this tournament (please note also is coincides as it usually does with Mount Saint Joseph’s Open House weekend – players would be unable to work at Open House if in the tournament).

The JV season is technically over, and JV players are not required to come to practice (the coaches have already asked some JV players to continue to practice and join the Varsity bench for the post-season). However, all JV players are highly encouraged to continue to practice to help the team and continue to develop their individual skills in the pool over the next three weeks. If JV players elect to continue to practice, the coaches ask that they fully commit to the remainder of the season, and not just drop in on a part-time basis. Transportation to the pool will continue through November 6th.

Looking ahead – MSJ swim team practice will begin Thursday, November 12th.

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for their victory over Gilman Tuesday. The team put together a great defensive effort in the 5 – 2 win, led by goalkeeper Danny “the shot killer” Miller. Adam Stein, Colin Scott and Ben Oursler contributed goals.

The Varsity Water Polo team played in another tight, evenly-matched game against Gilman, who the Gaels beat by one goal in their previous meeting. At Gilman’s smaller pool, however, the Gaels’ swimming advantage was largely negated, and at the end, Gilman avenged their earlier one-goal loss with a one-goal victory of their own; St. Joe lost 7 – 8. Michael Caulfield, Dylan Gwinn and Andy Rudrow scored for St. Joe.

Announcement and Score from PA games

From: Whitney Dougherty
Date: Mon, Oct 12, 2015 at 7:37 AM

Both squads for the Gaels drove into Pennsylvania on Saturday to take on Episcopal Academy and The Hill School.

In the first game against Episcopal Academy, the Varsity squad was defeated 4-10. Goals were scored by Nick Emelio, Dylan Gwinn, and Cooper Hoskins. Andy Rudrow led with assists.

When it came time for JV to play, the competition became fierce. Unfortunately, after being tied after the 2nd quarter, the Gaels were unable to catch up to the shooting spree from Episcopal players and lost 7-9. Danny Miller accumulated 11 saves, while Colin Scott lead the scoring with 3 goals. Ben Oursler picked up 2 goals, and his teammates Luke Peters and Adam Stein each picked up a goal a piece.

The Hill School presented a formidable challenge for the JV squad, who played their 2 games on Saturday within hours of each other. Once again, the Gaels played a fiercely competitive match against their opponent. The Gaels were able to defeat the Hill School 8-7. Goals were scored by Frank Spitza, Luke Alli, Adam Stein, Luke Buczynski, John Nguyen, and Ben Oursler. Goalie Danny Miller earned another 13 saves. Congratulations to the JV squad on their victory.

In Varsity’s second game, personal fouls were handed out like Christmas presents. With that, the Varsity squad could not catch any breaks and lost to The Hill School 6-12. The majority of their goals were scored in the second half of the game. Goals were scored by Sam Monaco, Nick Emelio, Dylan Gwinn, and three goals by Michael Caulfield. Goalie Jeremy Gregory accumulated 10 saves during this game.

Thanks,

Ms. Whitney Dougherty

It was a great day at the CCBC pool yesterday, on Senior Day for the Varsity Water Polo team.

In a spirited contest, the Gaels silenced the nattering of the nabobs of the natatorium, and beat the perennial front-running Dons of Loyola, earning a Xaverian victory over the Jesuits that surely has our late Brother James Kelly smiling down upon us today. Congratulations to the entire team for a great victory. The Gaels’ offense succeeded in drawing 10 ejections against Loyola, and St. Joe’s 6-on-5 scoring was the difference in the game. Andy Rudrow let the team with 8 assists; Michael Caulfield had seven goals, Dylan Gwinn three and Nick Emelio one.

The Varsity Water Polo team gave a great effort against perennial powerhouse Calvert Hall, but ended up also falling short, 9 – 14. Michael Caulfield, Dylan Gwinn and Nick Emelio scored for St. Joe.

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for their 8 – 4 victory over Gilman last week. The Gaels jumped out to a 3 – 0 lead in the first quarter, held off a Gilman comeback and kept 5 – 4 lead going into halftime, and then shut out the Greyhounds in the second half. Adam Stein, Frank Spitza, John Nguyen, Colin Scott, Luke Peters and Ben Oursler all scored in the Gaels’ balanced offensive attack.

Congratulations as well to the Varsity Water Polo team for their 10 – 9 victory over Gilman in what was a very physical, hard-fought, back-and-forth battle that saw eight tie scores and four lead changes before Jeremy Gregory had the game-winning save as time expired. Special kudos go to Dylan Gwinn for his shut-down two-meter defense that kept the Gaels in the game. Michael Caulfield led the scoring with six goals; Peter Ogden, Nick Emelio and Dylan Gwinn also scored. Andy Rudrow once again led the team in assists.
