Save the date – Water Polo Alumni / Varsity Game Friday, January 4th 8:30 pm

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Wed, Nov 14, 2018 at 5:54 PM

Dear all,

The annual MSJ Water Polo Alumni / Varsity Game is scheduled for Friday night, January 4th, at 8:30 pm at CCBC. This is a fun time to get together with recent (and less recent!) alumni and current high school teammates (JV players can play too!) for an evening of polo. It’s a great chance for the 2018 team to get back in the water, and for fans of the game to catch some live action at CCBC.

Hope to see you there!

The WP Coaches

JV MIAA Championship

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Wed, Oct 31, 2018 at 10:06 AM

Extended version of the in-school announcement from yesterday:

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for winning the MIAA Championship over Gilman on Saturday, 8 – 6. The players and coaches want to say THANK YOU to all the parents, friends and fans who supported the team all year, especially the crowd that traveled to McDonogh: the players were truly inspired by your enthusiastic support.

In the game on Saturday, Gilman started strong and MSJ was down 0 – 2 in the first five minutes, but the Gaels got one back before the end of the first quarter and then team defense locked Gilman down (special kudos to Patrick Bauer, Wesley Reising and Ed DeMaria, who each recorded three steals in the game) and only the Gaels scored in the second quarter, ending the half with a 4 – 2 advantage. MSJ continued to play tough and with confidence in the second half, but Gilman was resilient and stuck around, partly on account of a day when MSJ had more trouble than usual finding the back of the net; the Gaels missed 16 shots on the day, and at the end of the third quarter enjoyed only a 6 -5 lead. But in the 4th quarter, an arcing 7-meter lob shot from Zane Miklasz and a line drive past the goalie’s reach from Alexander Chairs and never-let-up team defense down the stretch proved to be the difference, and the MSJ avenged the only loss of their season, suffered at Gilman’s pool just four days earlier, by defeating the Greyhounds for the JV Championship, 8 – 6.

Goals: Ed DeMaria (3), Alexander Chairs (2), Wesley Reising (1), Patrick Bauer (1), Zane Miklasz (1)

easterns schedule

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Wed, Oct 31, 2018 at 8:15 AM

Dear all,

Please see below for the game schedule for Easterns. Note that we are in the 9:00 am game on Saturday at The Baldwin School. Win or lose in Game 1, we will have an evening game at 5:00 or 7:00 pm Saturday. If we win Game 1, we have two additional games on Sunday; if we lose Game 1, we play at 2:00 pm Sunday. Whether our game(s) on Sunday are at The Baldwin School or The Episcopal Academy depends on how EA progresses through the bracket; no matter what, they will play at their own pool on Sunday.

The team should plan to load two MSJ minibuses at the Smith Center lot immediately after school. We will then travel to CCBC for a tune-up practice before getting on the road to the hotel. Dinner will either by en route to King of Prussia or at the Mall after we arrive.

The Mother of Divine Providence Catholic Church is close to our hotel and has multiple services. If it is possible given the progression of our wins/losses and game schedule, there will be an opportunity to shuttle to mass.

Varsity semifinals vs. Loyola results

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Fri, Oct 26, 2018 at 7:45 PM

Congratulations to the Varsity water polo team for their excellent effort in the MIAA Championship semi-finals today, where the Gaels faced the Loyola Dons for the second time in three days. MSJ came out strong with excellent defense and executed on offense to take a 2 – 0 lead, and at the end of the first half, Lorenzo Gurri narrowly missed a blistering upper corner goal after a called foul well outside five meters with one second left that would have ended the half on a tie, but instead the Gaels entered half-time at a close 4 – 5 disadvantage, giving the #1 seeded Dons all they could handle. Unfortunately, in the second half, the Dons’ swimming athleticism became more of an advantage, and the Gaels ended up losing 5 – 13, a score that doesn’t really reveal how competitive the match-up was and how well MSJ played overall. Special kudos to Christian McCormick, who was a beast in the goal, recording 14 saves (including a bunch of key stops in the first half), one steal and several good plays that helped MSJ maintain possession after a block. Ryan Morgan, Jeremy Luers, Lorenzo Gurri and Hunter Smith scored for MSJ, and Jack Gregory & Matt Emelio joined these players recording assists.

Loyola games

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Thu, Oct 25, 2018 at 8:38 AM

In their first meeting, the JV Water Polo team battled Loyola to a 5 – 3 advantage. Among the top three teams in the JV MIAA division, Loyola lost to Gilman, MSJ’s victorious opponent on Tuesday, by only one goal in each meeting. Yesterday, the MSJ JV Water Polo team found themselves down 1 – 2 at the end of the first quarter, but then found an offensive groove to match their excellent team defense, and the game ended in a decisive 12 – 4 victory for the Gaels. Goals were scored by Alexander Chairs, Wesley Reising, Patrick Bauer, Patrick Scott and Edward DeMaria.

The Varsity Water Polo team faced a tough opponent in Loyola yesterday, who is tied with Gilman atop the standings in the varsity MIAA division. The Gaels put together what was probably their most complete game of the season, offensively and defensively, across all four quarters. MSJ spotted Loyola three goals in the first five minutes of the game, but then hung tough the rest of the way and finished 7 – 10. Hunter Smith, Jack Gregory and Lorenzo Gurri all scored in the game. Neil Gulmert and Jeremy Luers joined these players in earning assists.

On the varsity level, both Gilman and Loyola ended with a 9 – 1 league record, splitting their games against each other and beating the rest of the field in each game. MSJ is the #4 seed in the MIAA playoffs at McDonogh tomorrow. A coin flip later today will determine the #1 and #2 seed in tomorrow’s semi-final games and who our opponent will be. I will send a message as soon as we know.

Special congratulations to the seniors who yesterday were part of their final game at CCBC: Jack Gregory, Matt Emelio, Jeremy Luers, Lorenzo Gurri, Ryan Morgan, Gage Bangert, Aidan Dunworth, Aidan Czyryca and Alex Andrews. Special thanks to seniors Paul Nguyen and Jack Paine for their service this season in working the scoring table.

Thank you to all the parents who contributed to the food spread for the team celebration yesterday, and special thanks to Ellen Quinn for organizing. Thank you to Haley DeMaria for working the game clocks, and thank you to Mark Pennsy for continuing to share with us photos from our games.

Stay tuned for the coin flip results. See everyone at McDonogh this weekend!

Gilman games

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Wed, Oct 24, 2018 at 8:18 AM

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for their effort against Gilman yesterday. For the first time this season, the Gaels found themselves down by two goals and had to play from behind, and by the middle of the second quarter the deficit stretched to 1 – 6 on account of a few miscues and some errant shots. From that point on, the Gaels rallied, relying on strong team defense – in the third quarter, the Gaels locked down the Greyhounds so effectively that Gilman didn’t even get off a shot – but the scoring hole was too deep to climb out of, and MSJ fell, 5 – 8. The team faces another tough opponent in Loyola today, and then the Gaels are guaranteed to face Gilman again on Saturday in the MIAA Championship game. Goal scores versus Gilman included Wesley Reising, Brayden Herr, Ed DeMaria and Alexander Chairs.

Congratulations as well to the Varsity Water Polo team for their effort against Gilman. The Gaels hung tough against the top-ranked team in the league and were only down 5 – 7 midway through the second quarter, but ultimately were outmatched 9 – 17. Goals were scored by Jack Gregory, Ryan Morgan, Hunter Smith, Jeremy Luers and Lorenzo Gurri. Matt Emelio and Neil Gulmert joined these players in recording assists.

Spalding games 10/18

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Fri, Oct 19, 2018 at 7:06 AM

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for their defeat of Spalding 15 – 6, bringing their record to 8 – 0 on the season. Goals were scored by Wesley Reising, Patrick Bauer, Patrick Scott, Alexander Chairs and Peter Monaco. Edward DeMaria, Joe Pennsy and Zane Miklasz joined these players in recording assists.

Congratulations as well to the Varsity Water Polo team. It took a little bit of time for the team to get it going, and the Gaels found themselves down 2 -3 early in the second period, but MSJ cranked up the intensity and execution a notch and were able to prevail with a comfortable but not exactly dominating victory of 15 – 9. Goals were scored by Lorenzo Gurri, Hunter Smith, Neil Gulmert, Jack Gregory and Gage Bangert. Matt Emelio, Jeremy Luers and Ryan Morgan joined these players in recording assists. Christian McCormick and Gage Bangert defended goal well, combining for 15 saves.

Dear all,

Loyola games

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Mon, Oct 15, 2018 at 8:01 PM

Dear all,

The pool at CCBC was closed today due to a heater malfunction that brought the temperature up to a level that was unsafe. It will not be determined until some point tomorrow (Tuesday) when the pool will be open for use again.

Given the uncertainty of the situation regarding whether the pool will be available tomorrow, we have proposed moving the Loyola games to Wednesday. However, as of this email (Monday evening), we have no confirmation whether officials will be available nor do we have confirmation that Loyola has agreed to the date change and has amended their travel plans.

Players should come to school on Tuesday prepared to play Loyola. It may be that we end up needing to travel to Loyola to play the games if Wednesday does not work out. Or it may be that the CCBC pool is open and we have the games as scheduled. If Wednesday does work out and the CCBC pool opens, we will have practice tomorrow instead of games.

As soon as we know anything tomorrow, a message will be sent by email and posted at Team App.

Thank you,

Greg McDivitt

“Easterns” water polo tournament, November 3 & 4

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Mon, Oct 15, 2018 at 8:45 AMDear all,

On Saturday and Sunday, November 3 & 4, the varsity water polo team will play in the annual Eastern Interscholastic Prep School Water Polo Tournament (“Easterns”), which this year will be held as one larger single-bracketed tournament (unlike the model in most of the past year, where an 8-team “A” bracket played a separate tournament in a totally different location than the “B” bracket played). The games will be played at The Baldwin School (701 Montgomery Ave, Bryn Mawr, PA) and The Episcopal Academy (1785 Bishop White Dr, Newtown Square, PA).

Because the format has changed to a larger single bracket, the games begin early Saturday morning instead of Saturday afternoon, and although seedings and our exact game schedule will not be finalized until the Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey league tournaments have been completed during the last week of October, initial seedings indicate that it is likely Mount Saint Joseph will play an early Saturday morning game. As a result, the water polo team will be traveling with a two-night stay rather than a single overnight for this year’s tournament. We plan to depart from MSJ’s campus after school on Friday, November 2nd. We will be staying at the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia at the King of Prussia Mall (260 Mall Blvd).

This is a varsity-only tournament. However, as is our custom, some of the older JV players have been invited to move up as eligible bench players for this post-season tournament; these sophomore players have already received word from the coaches at the pool. Our practice schedule extends throughout the week of October 29th. All JV players who are not traveling to Easterns are encouraged but not required to attend practice this final week of the season.

A permission slip and will be available soon. This year, players will be asked to pay a fee ($50.00) to help defray the travel costs.

Further details and documents to follow soon.

Thank you,

Greg McDivitt

announcement – calvert hall games

From: Greg McDivitt

Date: Mon, Oct 15, 2018 at 8:09 AM

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for their dismantling of Calvert Hall on Friday, 17 – 3, to remain undefeated in MIAA play. Goals were scored by Wesley Reising, Patrick Scott, Brayden Herr, Edward DeMaria, Patrick Bauer, Reagan Sullivan and Alexander Chairs. Cole Hite, Joe Pennsy and Zane Miklasz joined these players in recording assists.

Congratuations as well to the Varsity Water Polo team who defeated Calvert Hall 11 – 10, setting themselves up for entry into the MIAA post-season tournament later this month. It was a hotly contested match in the cold water and echo chamber of Calvert Hall’s small pool, and the game saw six ties and five lead changes. One of the keys to the Gaels’ victory was the defensive effort of goalie Christian McCormick, especially in the third quarter, when he shut out the Cardinals, and a 7 – 7 tie at the half translated to a 9 – 7 advantage going into the 4th quarter; Christian also blocked two penalty shots in the game. Ryan Morgan, Lorenzo Gurri, Jack Gregory and Hunter Smith all scored for the Gaels; Jeremy Luers, Neil Gulmert and Matt Emelio joined these players in recording assists.

McDonogh games & mid-season summaries

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Fri, Oct 5, 2018 at 11:58 AM

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team who began the second half of the regular season by beating McDonogh 13 – 3. The Gaels came out of the gate strong, applying pressure with an effective team defense that shut out the Eagles 8 – 0 in the first half. Goals were scored by Wesley Reising, Brayden Herr, Edward DeMaria, Patrick Bauer and Alexander Chairs. Patrick Bauer led the team with three assists.

Congratulations as well to the Varsity Water Polo team for their effort against McDonogh yesterday. The Gaels got down early and had to play catch up, and five times battled back to even the score early in the third quarter, but when McDonogh was then able to score five unanswered goals in the third, the margin was too big to overcome and MSJ fell, 9 – 13. Goals were scored by Hunter Smith, Jack Gregory and Neil Gulmert, and Neil, Hunter, Aidan Dunworth, Lorenzo Gurri and Ryan Morgan each recorded assists. Jack Gregory led the defense with four steals.

Apologies to those water polo veterans who may have become accustomed to more frequent game summaries in past years – I had the best intentions early season to continue the practice this year, but interruptions as I sat at the computer early in the season occurred and then I just got out of the habit. So I am re-committed to reporting on games the rest of the season! See below for a quick summary of the seasons so far:

The Varsity Water Polo team began its season playing three games in the annual “Philmore” (Philadelphia teams in the Inter-Ac conference vs. Baltimore teams in the MIAA) Cup over Labor Day weekend by defeating Penn Charter. The team started strong and earned a 6 – 1 lead by halftime, and then maintained that advantage for a 12 – 7 win. Competition was tougher on day 2 of the tournament when MSJ faced Episcopal Academy and Haverford, and though the Gaels fought hard and were in each of the games to the end, MSJ could never earn and maintain a lead, and ended up losing 6 – 10 and 11 – 15, respectively.

The following weekend the Varsity team pursued a grueling schedule of five games in two days at the Battle of the Beltways competition at the US Naval Academy. Neil Gulmert stepped up to do a great job as goalie in these games (36 saves, 3 assists and 1 steal), subbing in for the injured Christian McCormick, who was present supporting his team all weekend (Gage Bangert also played one quarter in goal). The Gaels stumbled out of the gate significantly out-shooting but not out-scoring the Navy Water Polo Club, 3 – 5. In the next game, MSJ took care of business against St. Benedict’s Prep (NJ) 10 – 3, and then similarly dispatched Walt Whitman 10 – 3. In what was arguably their best game of the young season, MSJ played Greenwich (CT) to a 4 – 8 loss, and for most of the game their solid defense kept the score within one or two goals, frustrating the opposing players from one of the premier programs on the east coast. By the time the Gaels got to their fifth game, the team lost some of their mojo and unfortunately lost to Gonzaga 4 – 11. In the tournament, goals were scored by Hunter Smith, Lorenzo Gurri, Jack Gregory, Ryan Morgan, Gage Bangert and Matt Emelio. Aidan Dunworth and Jeremy Luers joined these players in recording assists.

In MIAA competition, the Varsity team reached the halfway point of the season in 4th place, battling hard against McDonogh, Loyola and Gilman to 10 – 12, 11 – 15 and 7 – 14 losses, respectively, handling Spalding 17 – 11, and also beating Calvert Hall in a-little-too-close-for-comfort 11 – 10 win in a game that the Gaels led 11 – 7 midway through the 4th quarter. Ebbs and flows and ups and downs have marked the season thus far, and the Gaels have shown that they have what it takes to play with any competition and are still in pursuit of The Complete Game. Four more MIAA regular season games, the MIAA playoffs and the post-season Easterns tournament still lie ahead.

The JV water polo team has fielded a strong mix of sophomore returners, experienced freshmen and novice players and reached the midpoint of the MIAA season undefeated in sole possession of first place. The Gaels defeated McDonogh and Calvert Hall soundly, 16 – 6 and 17 – 5, and then faced a strong test against perennial JV powerhouse Loyola and emerged victorious with a 5 – 3 win at their pool. The team then handled a group of novice players on the newly formed Spalding JV squad, earning an 11 – 0 advantage before securing an 18 – 6 win, and then beat Gilman 12 – 7 in what was the closest matchup next to Loyola; the Gaels and the Greyhounds traded goals for most of the game, but MSJ’s 5 – 1 scoring advantage in the second quarter proved to be the difference. On the season, leading scorers have included Alexander Chairs, Wesley Reising, Patrick Bauer, Brayden Herr and Edward DeMaria; Patrick Scott, Joe Pennsy, Zane Miklasz and Peter Monaco have also scored goals. Cole Hite, Matt Lessler and Reagan Sullivan have joined the aforementioned players in earning assists. Cole has also stepped up and contributed to a strong defense by moving from the field into goal for this year’s squad, recording 33 saves at the midpoint of the season.

Both squads battle Calvert Hall at their pool on Tuesday, October 9th. Go Gaels!

WATER POLO SUIT ORDER WEBSITE

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Fri, Sep 14, 2018 at 2:06 PM

Dear all,

The order site for the MSJ Water Polo Team suit is now live. See the link below. For those with experience in water polo suits, the recommendation is that the suit fits more like a Turbo suit and runs a little bit tighter than a Zumo suit. Those without experience buying suits for water polo, the recommendation when you are on a size borderline is to go smaller and tighter.

Please make your order by midnight on Tuesday, September 18th. This should enable shipment in the week of October 1st.

Team suits are not required for players, but recommended.

Note that these suits are customizable with your name. For consistency’s sake – last names only please. No nicknames. No first names.

Dear all,

Our weekend schedule (for varsity) at Navy:

Saturday

9:00 am vs. Navy 16U, Scott

3:00 pm vs. St. Benedict’s Prep, Scott

Sunday

10:00 am vs. Whitman, LeJeune

12:00 pm vs. Greenwich B, LeJeune

MSJ Bus is leaving from campus (meet at the circle) for any player who needs a ride at 7:15 am Saturday and at 8:15 am on Sunday. Players not opting to ride the bus and instead go directly to Annapolis should be on deck 8:00 am on Saturday and 9:00 am on Sunday. Please let me know directly if you are riding the MSJ bus on one or both days so I know who to expect. I will be at the pool today, and it’s okay if any family needs to figure out arrangements this evening – just email me if you need a ride. It is fine to ride one way as well.

Remember that an ID is required to enter the grounds at the Academy. Parking is generally not available on campus and must be obtained in Annapolis. Class reunions and a home football game will increase traffic and reduce parking availability this weekend, so please plan accordingly and provide ample time.

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Tue, Jul 10, 2018 at 10:38 AM

Dear all,

Reminder about the requirement for incoming 9th graders and rising 11th graders to have updated IMPACT testing completed in order to participate in tryouts, practices, games and meets at MSJ. The testing provides a baseline that is used to supplement physician’s protocols when assessing when it is safe to resume activity after a concussion/brain injury.

The dates below are the remaining summer dates (including TODAY!) for scheduling appointments with Mr. Jon Glover to take the test. If possible and applicable, please try to take of this ASAP so as to avoid a possible delay in being eligible to get in the water. I am unsure what other dates and times might be available at the end of August or later in the year.

Summer Water Polo Drop-in practice opportunities begin Sunday, July 8

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Tue, Jul 3, 2018 at 1:46 PM

Dear all,

I am writing to announce the scheduling of opportunities for water polo drop-in practices and shoot-arounds on Sunday mornings at Hunting Hills pool (300 Nottingham Road, Baltimore, 21229) in the Ten Hills neighborhood in Baltimore.

The optional practices will run from 8:30 – 10:30 am on Sunday mornings this summer beginning this Sunday, July 8th. Mr. Dylan Gwinn, MSJ alumnus water polo player and swimmer, current swim coach at Hunting Hills, and current collegiate water polo player at Washington and Jefferson college will lead the practices. Attendees are asked to pay a $5.00 cash drop-in fee for each session attended.

Thank you to the Gwinn family, the Gregory family and any others who have helped to arrange this opportunity. Current players, incoming freshmen, recent alumni and current swimmers who might not have yet played water polo are all invited to participate in these informal sessions. No experience is necessary. Included in the “To” list of this email are the parents of incoming freshmen that I had notations about being interested in water polo or swimming at MSJ. Please spread the word to others who might be interested that I may have omitted from the list.

I wish everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July holiday!

IMPACT Testing – Required for some; summer dates available

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Thu, Jun 14, 2018 at 12:08 PM

Dear all,

Apologies if you are receiving this email and it does not apply – sending it out to the water polo/swim team distribution lists.

IMPACT Testing is required of rising juniors (class of 2020) to participate in interscholastic sports. IMPACT testing provides a baseline that can be used as part of the protocol at MSJ when working with physicians to determine how to safely get back to full activity levels after sustaining an injury that causes concussion symptoms and diagnoses.

Mr. Jon Glover, MSJ’s Athletic Trainer, is providing several limited-space opportunities for testing this summer. To schedule an appointment, please email him directly. The tests last approximately 45 minutes.

Easterns

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Mon, Nov 6, 2017 at 7:15 AM

Congratulations to the varsity water polo team for their win against Saint Benedict’s Prep of Newark, New Jersey in the "Easterns" prep school tournament this past weekend. The Gaels were down 1 – 4 early in the second period, but then clamped down on defense and executed on offense during a 10 – 2 run deep into the fourth period, and ended up with the victory, 11 – 8. Lorenzo Gurri and Matt Emelio led teh scoring with three goals apiece, Ryan Morgan and Adam Stein each scored twice, and Jack Gregory added a goal.

The victory put MSJ into a re-match game against early-season opponent Landon. The Gaels found themselves down 3 – 6 at half in what was a spirited, high-energy contest, and MSJ surged in the third period, scoring the first four goals of the second half to take a 7 – 6 lead, but the team couldn’t hold off Landon’s answer back and found themselves down 7 – 11 midway through the fourth quarter. The final score was 9 – 13. Matt Emelio led the scoring with four goals, Adam Stein had two goals, and Ben Oursler, Lorenzo Gurri and Colin Scott each scored. John Nguyen and Jack Gregory led the team with two assists each.

Game 1 on Saturday vs. Hill was less competitive, and MSJ lost 4 – 12. Goals were scored by Matt Emelio (2), Ben Oursler (1) and Dane Milleker (1).

Congratulations to the entire team for their hard work all season. Special thanks to all the parents for their support. The coaches look forward to the banquet at the end of the month – information to follow soon.

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Thu, Oct 19, 2017 at 8:53 AM

Dear all,

Loyola games recap (one day late!):

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for their effort against Loyola Tuesday. Down by one after two periods with the score at 2 – 3, the Gaels succeeded in creating scoring opportunities (18 missed shots) but had trouble matching Loyola’s intensity and the game slipped away in the second half, and the Gaels fell, 4 – 11. Neil Gulmert (2), Patrick Bauer (1) and Hunter Smith (1) scored for MSJ, and Neil, John Tis and Patrick Scott recorded assists.

Congratulations to the Varsity Water Polo team for their game against Loyola on Senior Day this past Tuesday. The Gaels worked hard and had much success on offensive drives, getting position and drawing ejections (13 against Loyola vs. only 5 against MSJ), but ultimately MSJ could not overcome the Dons, losing 6 – 11. Adam Stein scored five times, and Jack Gregory had a goal. Colin Scott led the team with three assists; Ben Oursler also recorded one. Congratulations to Ben, Colin, Adam, Danny Miller, John Nguyen, Tyler Overmier and Dane Milleker for playing in their last home game of their careers.

See everyone at Gilman today!

calvert hall games

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Fri, Sep 22, 2017 at 7:25 AM

Congratulations to the JV water polo team for their victory over Calvert Hall yesterday. The Cardinals came out strong and St. Joe was down 2 – 5 at the end of the first quarter, but the Gaels came roaring back with thirteen unanswered goals and held Calvert Hall scoreless until the final two and a half minutes of the game, ultimately winning 16 – 7. Hunter Smith scored ten times in the game, Alexander Chairs scored four goals and led the team with five steals, and Neil Gulmert added a goal and led the team with four assists. John Tis also scored. Special kudos to Christian McCormick, who had nine saves to lead the defense that held Calvert Hall to a shutout for nearly three full quarters.

Congratulations to the Varsity water polo team for a great effort against Calvert Hall yesterday. The Gaels dominated early, earning a 4 – 1 lead at the end of the first period, and the score was only 4 – 2 at the half as both defenses buckled down. The Cardinals edged ahead 6 – 8 after three periods as the Gaels started to commit more major fouls than they drew, and eventually MSJ ran out of gas at the end, falling 7 – 13. Congratulations to the whole team for the strong effort against the MIAA’s perennial powerhouse. Matt Emelio, Adam Stein, Colin Scott and Ben Oursler all scored in the game, and Danny Miller was rock solid in goal, recording a season-best 17 saves.

Gilman & McDonogh games

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Fri, Sep 15, 2017 at 8:35 AM

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for a hard-fought effort in a closely-contested game versus Gilman on Tuesday. Five times the Gaels came from behind to tie the score, and never trailed by more than two goals, and although they had possession inside the last 30 seconds of the game, MSJ was unable to force an overtime and lost, 9 – 10. Neil Gulmert and Hunter Smith led the scoring with three goals apiece; Patrick Scott and Patrick Bauer also scored. Sean Miller led the team with three assists.

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for their victory over McDonogh yesterday, 8 – 6. Hunter Smith led the scoring with four goals. Neil Gulmert, Logan Anderson and Cole Hite also scored, and Patrick Bauer’s goal late in the fourth quarter sealed the victory. Neil Gulmert led the team with four assists, and Patrick Scott and Cole Hite helped anchor a strong team defense, each player recording two steals.

Congratulations to the Varsity Water Polo team for hard-fought efforts versus Gilman and McDonogh last Tuesday and yesterday. The team showed improvement in each game, not to mention lots of grit and determination all the way through the games. The guys played hard and never backed down. The Gilman game ended in a 5 – 14 loss. In the McDonogh game, MSJ hung with the talented Eagles and only trailed 3 – 5 at halftime, but eventually fell by a score of 5 – 10. Adam Stein, Jack Gregory, Ben Oursler and Lorenzo Gurri all scored in the games; Luke Peters and Danny Miller joined these players in recording assists. Danny played tough in goal in both games, recording nine and twelve saves, respectively, and occasionally absorbed some punishment against offenses armed with strong shooters.

Congratulations to the varsity water polo team for their efforts at the Battle of the Beltways tournament at Navy this past weekend. The team had some highs and some lows as they soldiered through four losses on the weekend, but the team played some of their best polo of the young season against some of the best competition faced so far, and thus have positive momentum that we hope carries into the league competition that begins this week. Adam Stein led the team in scoring with seven goals; Lorenzo Gurri, Ryan Morgan, Jack Gregory and Gage Bangert also scored. Ben Oursler, Ryan Morgan and Jack Gregory all tied for the team lead in assists with three apiece; Aidan Dunworth, Lorenzo Gurri, Colin Scott, Adam Stein, John Nguyen and Matt Emelio also added assists.

Philmore Cup – great start and thank you; BattleOTBeltways

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Mon, Sep 4, 2017 at 8:16 PM

Dear MSJ Water Polo,

A message forwarded on behalf of Coach Patrick:

The coaching staff wants to congratulate the MSJ water polo varsity squad on a very promising and hard-fought beginning to the season at the Philmore tournament – very exciting games this weekend! Even though two losses were of sizable margin, the guys played very well for only having nine practices together to date. The team shows great potential.

We also want to thank the awesome parent group we have for their vocal and positive support as well as the awesome spread of nourishment for the boys between games. It is truly a great time seeing this polo family in action.

Lastly, we want to thank our captains for their leadership and efforts in helping guide the team this weekend. Fantastic job!

We are looking forward to an exciting and rewarding season. Go Gaels!

RE: the Battle of the Beltways tournament at Navy this weekend (Varsity only)

The tournament schedule required revision and we still have not received an updated version. It is most likely that we will play at 1:00 and at 4:00 on Saturday, but it is not yet clear when we play on Sunday; though it seems likely we will play at 11:00, and then perhaps at 3:00. The updated schedule will be passed along as soon as we have it.

Players are encouraged to arrange their own transportation to Annapolis this weekend. If necessary, a shuttle bus will run from MSJ for any player who needs a ride.

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Tue, Aug 29, 2017 at 6:34 PM

Dear all,

I am sending this first email to the fully updated distribution list shortly before the MIAA Sportsmanship meeting, where I will speak to many of you in person. On behalf of the all the coaches, I extend a welcome to the returning and new players and parents of MSJ Water Polo. One of the main lines of communication this season will be via emails such as these, which will also be duplicated at Team App (you can download Team App from your app store and search for “MSJ Water Polo” and join as a player or a parent).

We have had a great start to our season, extending for some back to a few months of Sunday drop-ins at Hunting Hills pool, to the start of official practices last week and our scrimmages this past weekend, to the beginning of practices at our home pool at CCBC where we greeted a few more new members yesterday. Again, welcome to all.

Please note the following practice schedule times at CCBC, which will be in place for the remainder of the season:

Monday 3:00 – 5:00

Thursday 3:00 – 4:45

Wednesday 3:00 – 4:30

Tuesday 3:00 – 4:45

Friday 3:00 – 4:00

Note: no practice on Friday, 9/1 (Varsity traveling to Philmore Cup)

Also no practice on Monday, 9/4 (Labor Day holiday)

Stay tuned for more information as the season progresses!

1) Team store to purchase a TEAM SUIT is now live at this website: https://www.zumousa.com/collections/mount-saint-joseph-saints-water-polo-shop-2017. All players should purchase a team suit for use during games. Other brief/jammer suits are fine for practices. This online store will remain open through Friday, August 25th, and we are hoping for a quick turn-around on delivery after that. This site also carries a new optional team towel.

2) Team store to purchase official MSJ Water Polo deck-wear and other items for players, parents and other fans will go live later this summer. This will be through the Propst & Sons company that all MSJ athletic gear has been purchased for the last few years.

It is an opportunity for current and past players to keep their skills up and have some fun, and it is an opportunity for brand new players to learn about the game and meet some future teammates. MSJ Water Polo Summer Drop-In Practices/Shoot-Arounds

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Fri, Jun 30, 2017 at 3:04 PM

Hello,

You are in receipt of this email because you are a Mount Saint Joe water polo player and/or swimmer, the parent of such, or the parent of an incoming student who has indicated an interest in water polo and/or swimming. Please forward this message to anyone that I may have inadvertently omitted.

This email announces that beginning on Sunday, July 9th, Mount Saint Joseph will be hosting informal drop-in practices and shoot-arounds from 9:30 – 11:00 am at Hunting Hills pool (300 Nottingham Road, Baltimore, 21229 – see directions below). These informal events will continue each Sunday through August 20th. You are invited and encouraged to attend as many sessions as you can, but attendance is not required. It is an opportunity for current and past players to keep their skills up and have some fun, and it is an opportunity for brand new players to learn about the game and meet some future teammates.

Assistant Water Polo Coach Elliot Hall and Hunting Hills Swim Coach Dylan Gwinn, each MSJ polo and swimming alumni, will be the primaries in charge of running the sessions. Other recent alumni may assist, and coaches Patrick Underwood, Whitney Dougherty and I will attend sporadically as schedules allow.

Students who attend are asked to bring a $5.00 participation fee with them each day to help cover use of the facility. We are very thankful that Hunting Hills has provided our school with this opportunity. Players – please remember that we are guests at the facility.

I hope that everyone’s summer is going well! Please let me know if you have any questions.
