spring water polo at the Y in Catonsville

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Mon, Apr 25, 2016 at 4:47 PM

Dear all,

Through the initiative of Mrs. Marianne Gregory, mother of Jack (9) and Jeremy (12) (not to mention two MSJ water polo alumni!), it appears that we are on track to have an opportunity for spring water polo at the Y on Rolling Road in Catonsville, much as we did through the work of Mrs. Gregory and other MSJ parents last spring.

Mr. Elliot Hall, MSJ class of 2014 and Navy Men’s Club water polo player, has agreed to lead the training and skills development sessions, which are tentatively scheduled for Sunday evenings from 6:00 – 6:45 pm.

Please note: the sessions may begin as soon as this Sunday, May 1st.

Please contact Mrs. Marianne Gregory directly with questions and for more information about how to register at the Y for this opportunity, which will incur a class session fee. If applicable, Mrs. Gregory may also forward information via a Reply All to this message.

Thank you,

Greg McDivitt

Dear all,

A website has been created for the 2015 Eastern Prep Water Polo championships this weekend:

http://2015.waterpoloeasterns.com/

You are encouraged to check the website for game updates and other information.

PLEASE NOTE: a final re-seeding of the tournament has moved Mount Saint Joseph from the 4th seed to the 3rd seed. Our game time of 5:00 pm on Saturday is unchanged, but our first opponent is now Pingry, not Germantown Academy. Given the different seed, our possible games on Sunday are now changed as well. Full bracket available at the website.

Reminder to meet at MSJ Saturday at 11:45 am for a 12:00 noon departure.

Date: Mon, Oct 26, 2015 at 7:41 AM

Congratulations to the Varsity Water Polo team for their great effort in the MIAA Water Polo tournament last Friday in what may have been the best post-season showing in the 15-year history of the program. In an evenly-matched, toughly-fought battle against Loyola, the Gaels outshot the Dons 31 – 22, but ultimately came up short, 7 – 10. Dylan Gwinn and Michael Caulfield scored for the Gaels, Andy Rudrow again led the team in assists, and Jeremy Gregory recorded 12 saves in the game.

The Varsity Water Polo team has qualified for the Eastern Prep Water Polo Championships to be held in New Jersey in two weeks.

From: Greg McDivitt

Congratulations to the Varsity Water Polo team for their victory against McDonogh yesterday, in a game that Head Coach Patrick Underwood described as “one of the best-played games in the history of the Mount Saint Joseph water polo program.” Great defense defined the Gaels’ effort, and goalie Jeremy Gregory came up big and recorded 8 of his 11 saves in the second half, enabling St. Joe to erase a 6 – 8 deficit in the third quarter and score five unanswered goals on the way to an 11 – 8 victory. On the offensive end, Michael Caulfield and Dylan Gwinn led the scoring with six and four goals, respectively. Andy Rudrow added a goal, and he shared the team lead in assists with Sam Monaco, each recording three. The victory assured Mount Saint Joe a spot in the MIAA playoffs next weekend.

The JV Gaels battled McDonogh to a scoreless tie at halftime and then scored first in the third quarter, but then the game got away from them, and they fell to the Eagles, 3 – 8. Lorenzo Gurri, Jack Gregory and Ben Oursler all scored. Luke Peters, Adam Stein and John Nguyen had assists.

water polo banquet & post-season info

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Thu, Oct 15, 2015 at 7:58 PM

Dear all,

Save the date – the water polo banquet will be Thursday, November 19th at 7:00 pm in the MSJ cafeteria. We will again arrange catering with Italian cuisine from Mamma Lucia’s of Hanover. I will send out an email in early November with more details.

Regarding the remainder of the water polo season – the regular season ended today with the games at McDonogh. Varsity will play in the MIAA Championship playoffs beginning on Friday, October 23rd. Details about times will follow early next week, as they are dependent on the outcomes of games not yet played by other schools. The Eastern Prep tournament is Saturday/Sunday on November 7/8. As of now, the most likely location we will play is Lawrenceville, New Jersey, though pending the outcomes of tournaments next weekend among schools in Baltimore and in Philadelphia, it is possible we may play at the Episcopal Academy outside of Philadelphia. Stay tuned for details about times and locations for this tournament (please note also is coincides as it usually does with Mount Saint Joseph’s Open House weekend – players would be unable to work at Open House if in the tournament).

The JV season is technically over, and JV players are not required to come to practice (the coaches have already asked some JV players to continue to practice and join the Varsity bench for the post-season). However, all JV players are highly encouraged to continue to practice to help the team and continue to develop their individual skills in the pool over the next three weeks. If JV players elect to continue to practice, the coaches ask that they fully commit to the remainder of the season, and not just drop in on a part-time basis. Transportation to the pool will continue through November 6th.

Looking ahead – MSJ swim team practice will begin Thursday, November 12th.

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for their victory over Gilman Tuesday. The team put together a great defensive effort in the 5 – 2 win, led by goalkeeper Danny “the shot killer” Miller. Adam Stein, Colin Scott and Ben Oursler contributed goals.

The Varsity Water Polo team played in another tight, evenly-matched game against Gilman, who the Gaels beat by one goal in their previous meeting. At Gilman’s smaller pool, however, the Gaels’ swimming advantage was largely negated, and at the end, Gilman avenged their earlier one-goal loss with a one-goal victory of their own; St. Joe lost 7 – 8. Michael Caulfield, Dylan Gwinn and Andy Rudrow scored for St. Joe.

Announcement and Score from PA games

From: Whitney Dougherty
Date: Mon, Oct 12, 2015 at 7:37 AM

Both squads for the Gaels drove into Pennsylvania on Saturday to take on Episcopal Academy and The Hill School.

In the first game against Episcopal Academy, the Varsity squad was defeated 4-10. Goals were scored by Nick Emelio, Dylan Gwinn, and Cooper Hoskins. Andy Rudrow led with assists.

When it came time for JV to play, the competition became fierce. Unfortunately, after being tied after the 2nd quarter, the Gaels were unable to catch up to the shooting spree from Episcopal players and lost 7-9. Danny Miller accumulated 11 saves, while Colin Scott lead the scoring with 3 goals. Ben Oursler picked up 2 goals, and his teammates Luke Peters and Adam Stein each picked up a goal a piece.

The Hill School presented a formidable challenge for the JV squad, who played their 2 games on Saturday within hours of each other. Once again, the Gaels played a fiercely competitive match against their opponent. The Gaels were able to defeat the Hill School 8-7. Goals were scored by Frank Spitza, Luke Alli, Adam Stein, Luke Buczynski, John Nguyen, and Ben Oursler. Goalie Danny Miller earned another 13 saves. Congratulations to the JV squad on their victory.

In Varsity’s second game, personal fouls were handed out like Christmas presents. With that, the Varsity squad could not catch any breaks and lost to The Hill School 6-12. The majority of their goals were scored in the second half of the game. Goals were scored by Sam Monaco, Nick Emelio, Dylan Gwinn, and three goals by Michael Caulfield. Goalie Jeremy Gregory accumulated 10 saves during this game.

Thanks,

Ms. Whitney Dougherty

It was a great day at the CCBC pool yesterday, on Senior Day for the Varsity Water Polo team.

In a spirited contest, the Gaels silenced the nattering of the nabobs of the natatorium, and beat the perennial front-running Dons of Loyola, earning a Xaverian victory over the Jesuits that surely has our late Brother James Kelly smiling down upon us today. Congratulations to the entire team for a great victory. The Gaels’ offense succeeded in drawing 10 ejections against Loyola, and St. Joe’s 6-on-5 scoring was the difference in the game. Andy Rudrow let the team with 8 assists; Michael Caulfield had seven goals, Dylan Gwinn three and Nick Emelio one.

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for their 8 – 4 victory over Gilman last week. The Gaels jumped out to a 3 – 0 lead in the first quarter, held off a Gilman comeback and kept 5 – 4 lead going into halftime, and then shut out the Greyhounds in the second half. Adam Stein, Frank Spitza, John Nguyen, Colin Scott, Luke Peters and Ben Oursler all scored in the Gaels’ balanced offensive attack.

Congratulations as well to the Varsity Water Polo team for their 10 – 9 victory over Gilman in what was a very physical, hard-fought, back-and-forth battle that saw eight tie scores and four lead changes before Jeremy Gregory had the game-winning save as time expired. Special kudos go to Dylan Gwinn for his shut-down two-meter defense that kept the Gaels in the game. Michael Caulfield led the scoring with six goals; Peter Ogden, Nick Emelio and Dylan Gwinn also scored. Andy Rudrow once again led the team in assists.

Congratulations to the JV water polo team for their tough effort against Calvert Hall in their season opener yesterday. The Cardinals jumped out to a 4 – 0 lead over St. Joe in the first quarter, but the Gaels clawed their way back into the game in an exciting second half for the home crowd, bringing the score to a one-goal deficit with under a minute left, and had the chance to tie it up with three seconds left, but the shot didn’t go in, and St. Joe lost, 7 – 8. John Nguyen, Frank Spitza and Ben Oursler each scored twice, and Luke Buczynski added a goal. Adam Stein led the team with three assists. Danny Miller kept the Gaels in the game with 13 saves.

The Varsity Water Polo team fought hard against top-ranked Calvert Hall, and although they played well enough to score 11 against a tough team, they couldn’t stop Calvert Hall’s attack, and lost 11 – 22. Nick Emelio led the scoring with 6 goals; Michael Caulfield had four goals, and Chayse Adams and Jared Stein added a goal apiece. Andy Rudrow led the team with 6 assists.

NEW SCHEDULE FOR NAVY TOURNAMENT

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Thu, Sep 10, 2015 at 9:44 PM

Dear all,

The schedule for this weekend has been completely re-worked – we have different opponents and times (Varsity only). All games are at Scott Natatorium, NOT the big pool at LeJeune Hall. Please read on:

Saturday, 9/12

11:50 versus Gonzaga

5:30 versus Greenwich, CT

Sunday, 9/13

10:50 versus Whitman

4:40 versus Landon

Riding the minibus from MSJ is OPTIONAL. Please respond to me directly so I know who to expect on for the bus for each trip on Saturday and/or Sunday.

Minibus leaves MSJ at 10:00 am Saturday, and at 9:00 am Sunday. Players arriving via their own transportation should arrive on deck no later than 50 minutes before the start of each game. Players providing their own transportation do NOT need to remain on campus between games. The MSJ minibus will stay in Annapolis until after the second game each day, returning to MSJ in the evening.

Note: There will be a 5 Mile run on 12 Sep that will begin at Navy Marine Corps Stadium at 7:30 AM and will run through Annapolis passing Gate 1 and Gate 3 of the Naval Academy on King George street. Gate 1 and Gate 3 will be closed for vehicle access or departure between approximately 0740 and 0830. Traffic leaving gate 8 will be directed North on Route 450 during this time due to road closures in Annapolis. Pedestrian traffic will not be impacted. All weekend, vehicles should drive onto campus via Gate 8 or park outside campus and pedestrians walk onto the grounds via the pedestrian entrance at Gate 1. Map of the Saturday morning run course indicating road closures found at http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/787219081

For those players staying in Annapolis in between games, we will decide on walking to lunch at the USNA cantina or in downtown Annapolis. A few parents inquired about getting lunch similar to the awesome spread at Philmore last weekend (thank you again!); this is also fine, of course, but I don’t know yet how many players will stay on campus.

For those who may be seeking Catholic Mass in Annapolis because making a service at your own parish cannot be scheduled, given our games, there are a few local options available on Sunday:

8:30 am at St. Mary’s parish on Duke of Gloucester Street

9:00 am at the Naval Academy Chapel

12:40 pm at St. Mary’s (guys riding the bus could make this one)

Thank you,

Greg McDivitt

PS – good games versus the Hall today!

reminder – water polo picture day is TOMORROW

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Wed, Sep 9, 2015 at 1:53 PM

Dear all,

Last week, LifeTouch photo order forms were distributed to players at the pool for team picture day before the Calvert Hall meet TOMORROW.

Team photos will be taken for the yearbook before warmups tomorrow. Purchase of team & individual photos is totally optional, but all purchases must be paid in full tomorrow on the pool deck directly to the LifeTouch photographer – the coaches do not collect monies.

If you desire to purchase photos, please ask your son for the order form to fill it out and deliver with a check tomorrow. If you do not have a form available, several remain on the table on the pool deck (by the office) and be picked up tomorrow – you can send your son with a check, and he can fill out the form and write the check at the pool tomorrow.

Battle of Beltways Water Polo at Navy Saturday Sunday

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Tue, Sep 8, 2015 at 3:37 PM
Subject: Battle of Beltways Water Polo at Navy Saturday Sunday

Dear all,

This is a Varsity-only event this weekend. It runs from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on Saturday, and 8:00 am to 7:00 pm on Sunday.

A preliminary schedule was just sent out today, and at present MSJ has four games:

8:00 am Saturday

2:00 pm Saturday

9:00 am Sunday

5:00 pm Sunday

Feedback from coaches regarding scheduling was solicited, and although we cannot guarantee our schedule will change, it very well may be amended to include different team matchups and/or different times. Please stay tuned for updates, which I hope come tomorrow or Thursday at the latest.

Transportation from MSJ to Navy will be provided on a minibus, and it will be OPTIONAL. Players will NOT be expected to remain at Navy all day if we end up with a long lag time between games. If we have several hours between games, the minibus may make trips down and back and down and back. We will make final decisions regarding transportation once the schedule is set.

Thank you,

Greg McDivitt

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Tue, Jun 23, 2015 at 3:29 PM

Dear all,

I hope your summer has started well!

The Board of Hunting Hills Swimming Club has offered the MSJ water polo team (and any new students interested in joining) the opportunity to have solo use of the pool to play/practice water polo this summer. In particular, we have the chance to play on Sunday mornings from 10:00 am – 11:00 am for six weeks, beginning this Sunday, June 28th. The cost is only $30.00 for the full six weeks.

Hunting Hills is located at 300 Nottingham Road, 21229 (not too far from MSJ, tucked away in the neighborhood of Ten Hills).

Please respond to Alice Gwinn or Marianne Gregory if you plan on participating, even if it cannot be every one of the six weeks. Please also pass this opportunity along to any incoming MSJ 9th graders at your summer pools who may be interested.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make this opportunity possible!

announcement – water polo

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Fri, Oct 17, 2014 at 8:59 AM

The JV Gaels ran into trouble yesterday against a much improved McDonogh squad and split the season series by losing 4 – 11; the Gaels are now on the outside looking in as a long shot to make the MIAA championship game, their fate now based on the outcome of the upcoming McDonogh/Gilman game. In the game, Sam Monaco, Ben Oursler and Timmy Stevick scored; Sam, Timmy and Neil Schuster recorded assists.

On senior day, the Varsity Gaels played with heart and passion, but were unable to put together the flawless game needed to beat McDonogh, and lost 9 – 14. Michael Caulfield led the scoring with four goals; Sam Cook, Andrew O’Neil and Dylan Gwinn also scored. Andy Rudrow led the team in assists.

water polo games Saturday

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Thu, Oct 2, 2014 at 12:07 PM

Dear all,

Players should report to the MSJ turnaround at 8:15 am Saturday morning to load two minibuses for an 8:30 departure.

There appears to be a discrepancy in the scheduling time for the Episcopal games – we are scheduled up there for the Varsity game at 11:00 and the JV game at 12:00, not vice versa, as appears on our schedule. Please note these new times!

Congratulations to the JV Water Polo team for their victory over Calvert Hall on Tuesday, 10 – 3. Sam Monaco led the scoring with five goals; Adam Stein, Ben Oursler, Luke Buczynski and Zach Garry also scored. Special congratulations to goalie Danny “the shot killer” Miller, who had 20 saves, while allowing only three scores.

Congratulations as well to the Varsity Water Polo team for their great effort, intensity and team play versus a talented Calvert Hall squad yesterday. Though the Gaels led 6 – 5 at the half, their offensive attach stalled a little in the second half and the team fell, 7 – 10. Goals were scored by Sam Cook, Jacob Walls, Andy Rudrow, Andrew O’Neil and Michael Caulfield.

announcement – water polo

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Mon, Sep 29, 2014 at 8:38 AM

In water polo this past weekend at the Baltimore Challenge tournament at CCBC, MSJ battled hard in what were four closely matched games. Though the Gaels held the lead in each game for a time, St. Joe ended up not scoring a win, going 0-3-1 on the day. The JV team tied Landon 5-5, and fell to Gonzaga 10-11 in the final seconds. Sam Monaco led the scoring on the day with 12 goals. Adam Stein and Ben Oursler also scored. The Varsity team lost 11-14 to Landon, and then fell 8-12 to Gonzaga. Goals were scored by Sam Cook, Andrew O’Neil, Nick Emelio, Dylan Gwinn and Michael Caulfield. Sam Cook led the team with 7 assists.

announcement – water polo

From: Greg McDivitt

Congratulations to the JV water polo team for their victory yesterday against McDonogh, 5 – 2. The Gaels scored all their goals and held the Eagles scoreless in the first half in what ended up being a defensive battle in the big, all-deep tank at McDonogh. Sam Monaco, Ben Oursler and Luke Alli all scored for the Gaels. James Glover joined Sam and Ben in recording steals, and Adam Stein joined Sam in earning assists. Danny Miller was clutch as the keeper, saving 14 out of 16 shots on goal.

The Varsity water polo team had a tougher time against McDonogh, losing 4 – 15. Though the Gaels usually moved well in the offensive set, 21 errant shots prevented the team from seriously threatening McDonogh. Dylan Gwinn’s shut-down defense negated the impact of McDonogh’s best player, but it wasn’t enough. Dylan, Michael Caulfield and Andrew O’Neil scored for MSJ; Sam Cook led the team with three assists.

In their game against Gilman yesterday, the JV Water Polo team fell behind 4 – 9 by the end of the second quarter, but then found a way to battle back to an 11 – 11 tie late in the 4th, only to be scored upon in the last minute, and ultimately fell, 11 – 12. Sam Monaco led the team in scoring with seven goals; Ben Oursler, Tim Stevick and Neil Schuster also scored. Adam Stein led the team with four assists, and goalie Danny Miller’s 10 saves kept the Gaels in the game to the very end.

The Varsity Water Polo team also lost a one-goal heartbreaker to Gilman yesterday, 5 – 6. Although the Gaels’ driving offense drew 13 personal faults against Gilman, MSJ could only manage an average of four shots per quarter in the gritty defensive struggle. Kudos to goalie Jeremy Gregory whose 12 saves (8 in the second half) kept the game close all the way.

water polo – 10/4 and 10/25

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Wednesday, September 17, 2014

Dear all,

Please read below for clarification on our October weekend game dates:

On Saturday, October 4th, we do indeed travel together as an entire team in two minibuses to two different locations – the Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, PA and the Hill School in Pottstown, PA. JV and Varsity have one game at each location. If parents drive up to be spectators at the Hill School, it is fine for players to leave with their families from Hill. The minibuses return to MSJ and players can be picked up (or retrieve their cars) there Saturday night.

It is an unfortunate coincidence that MSJ Homecoming and the water polo championships (held at McDonogh) are each on Saturday, October 25th. Schedule:

Varsity semifinals (4 v 1) 3:00 pm (arrive 1 hour ahead for warm-ups if the 4 or 1 seed)

Varsity semifinals (3 v 2) 4:30 pm (arrive by start of first game if the 3 or 2 seed)

JV Championship (2 v 1) 5:45 pm (arrive by start of previous game)

Varsity Finals 7:00 pm

MSJ Homecoming Dance 7:00 – 10:00 pm

Students attending the Homecoming Dance are instructed to arrive at the dance no later than 8:00 pm, after which the no more entry is permitted. If there are MSJ water polo players that wish to attend the dance but would be later due to playing in the JV or Varsity championship game, I will ensure that exceptions are made and these players can get in to the dance late. Please note that Varsity players beginning a game at 7:00 pm would miss a significant amount of time at the dance. Please consider all of this when making plans.

water polo photo day; water polo team jackets

From: Greg McDivitt
Date: Monday, September 15, 2014

Dear all,

Water Polo team picture day is Tuesday, 9/30, when we host Calvert Hall at CCBC. Pictures will begin at 2:40.

Team pictures and action shots are taken for the yearbook. Side note: at season’s end, if you have excellent pictures that should be considered among the photos for yearbook, you can send them to me and I will forward to the yearbook staff.

Purchase of team and/or individual photos is totally optional. I distributed order forms at the pool last Friday, and more order forms are available between now and 9/30 from the table by the office at the pool, or from my office at school. All monies must be paid directly to the photographer on deck on 9/30; the coaches handle no part of this transaction.

Water polo team jackets are available for order from http://mountstjoseph.boathousegear.com/. Orders must be received by 9/22/2014. No order will be processed until after 9/22 (ships within four weeks), but a minimum of six orders is necessary for any jacket to be custom designed and delivered. Please visit the site and consider ordering a jacket. Maybe a Christmas present idea?

Thank you,

Greg McDivitt
